February 21, 2008 - Stan Van Gundy was born on September 21, 1959 in Indio, California. He is best known for being the head coach of the NBA team the Orlando Magic. In 2003, Van Gundy took the head coaching position of the Miami Heat until 2005. His brother is Jeff Van Gundy, the head coach of the Houston Rockets.
In 1981, Van Gundy was a senior in college and received the Scholar-Athlete of the Year at SUNY Brockport. During the late 1980s, he served as assistant head caoch at Canisius College and Fordham University. He also accepted the job as head coach of the Castleton State College team, the Spartans, finishing with a 68 - 18 record. After an appearance in the 1985 NAIA National Tournament, he went on to become the University of Massachusetts Lowell head coach.
Van Gundy racked up eight years of college coaching experience before entering into the NBA. He spent 12 years working for the Miami Heat organization. Eventually, Van Gundy was named part of the coaching staff in 1997. When fomer head coach Pat Riley resigned prior to the 2003-04 season, Van Gundy glady filled the vacant role. His first time into the leadership position, Van Gundy took the team to the second round of the NBA Playoffs.
In May of 2007, Van Gundy turned down the offer to become the Indian Pacers head coach. Not much later, he was also considered for the Orlando Magic and Sacramento Kings head coaching positions. In the end, Van Gundy accepted the Orlando Magic position after Billy Donovan backed out in June of that same year.
